Join us on Saturday 27th July from 11am for a wee outing. We will start at the bottom of Arthurs Seat and make our way up, round and down to the Sheep Heid Inn at The Causeway. He will deliver a JCI training entitled, 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝟒 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲. This training is designed and tailored to current JCI members who are already participating and/or benefitting from the opportunities that JCI offers but want to get more out of these opportunities.



We will also open our doors to individuals aged 18-40 considering joining JCI. We are a friendly bunch and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about our dynamic and inclusive organisation for young leaders and professionals!

&#8220;The Quiz &amp; Chipper Event&#8221;&nbsp;is a lunch time social hosted by&nbsp;JCI Aberdeen&nbsp;at&nbsp;The Ashvale, our local fish and chips restaurant. It provides members and potential members with an opportunity to socialise over a delicious meal while participating in a friendly quiz. With the aim of strengthening connections and fostering camaraderie within the&nbsp;JCI Aberdeen&nbsp;community, it promises a fun-filled afternoon of food and entertainment.



Note:&nbsp;£12 fee per attendee to be paid at the restaurant.

JCI Aberdeen Past President, Charles Henderson, would like to invite all JCI Aberdeen members to the Hearts of Gold Charity Burns Supper at The Aberdeeen Beach Ballroom on Friday, 2nd February 2024 at 6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. This event is supported by The Robert Burns World Federation North East Scotland in aid of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.



Tickets are sold at £60 per person, which covers a delicious 3-course meal, fantastic performances, entertainment, and a chance to enter the numerous raffle draws!

W﻿hat is Hybrid Agile?



M﻿ost people have heard of Agile. Many have tried it and found it lacking but many projects do not fit well into the traditional, predictive project management model. Hybrid Agile gives a way of merging the strengths of the two to deliver what the project needs.



H﻿ow and why do we use it?



P﻿eter will explore how the tools and techniques of each approach can be blended to give a highly effective way to manage projects that don&#8217;t fit into Predictive or Agile processes.

T﻿he above discussion will be supported with a practical example of the application of Hybrid Agile in a real situation.

Hybrid Agile is a relatively new project management concept that is gaining traction. The approach is not Oil and Gas specific and can be applied to any business where there is a repeating work process (i.e. procurement, subcontracts, fabrication, annual company accounts, etc.). Therefore, those outwith the Oil and Gas sector are also very welcome to attend and will benefit from this session!

<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-cranston/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Peter F Cranston</a>&nbsp;is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Registered Project Management Professional (PMP). He is also a Project Engineer and Project Manager with over 30 years’ experience across a wide range of projects, primarily Oil and Gas.



He is the Founder and Author of the Project Engineer’s Toolkit textbook and webinar series. More recently, he has been instrumental in implementing Hybrid Agile KANBAN solutions and training across a range of non-engineering processes for clients in the US Gulf of Mexico.

JCI Edinburgh will be hosting a Summer Cruise on the Union Canal for Edinburgh Chapter members and friends. The event is taking place on the 26th of August from 5-7 PM and is&nbsp;free&nbsp;for members &#8211; non-members can purchase tickets for £8. There will be a limited range of drinks and snacks served on board and everyone is welcome to bring their own beverages as well.

Nagashree ‘Nash’ Ramamurthy was inspired after attending our Crathes Castle Tour and proposed to co-organise a trip to Balmoral Castle! 



Balmoral is open only until 16th August, so the tour is scheduled for Saturday, 5th August at 9:00AM-3:00PM.



Currently, there are 10 spaces available (first come, first served). Participants will pay a contribution of £5 for the fuel costs, castle admission fee (~£15) and lunch. Message Isabel Simon at president@jciaberdeen.org.uk if you’d like to join so she can send you all the details. ????☀️????????

JCI Aberdeen’s Castle Hopping 2023 (a summer-long cultural and social event) culminates at the magnificent Crathes Castle on the 22nd of July! This 16th-century castle is surrounded by a bonnie estate and a walled garden. JCI Aberdeen will be hosting an Earth Day Clean-up project on Saturday, 22nd April 2023.



What is Earth Day about?



Marked by millions around the world, Earth Day is an annual event designed to shine a light on the serious environmental problems we’re facing, from the climate crisis to air pollution and deforestation.



Earth Day 2023 occurs after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a study in August 2021 that was regarded as a &#8220;code red for humanity,&#8221; with experts warning that temperatures are expected to soar above 2°C above pre-industrial levels this century (a scenario that would have catastrophic effects worldwide). Meanwhile, there was widespread dissatisfaction with the agreement reached at Cop26 in November 2021, demonstrating the severity of the task we confront.



Come join us, together with over 1 billion volunteers worldwide, in cleaning up our respective communities of litter and waste! Meet us at the entrance of Torry Point Battery at 10:00AM with your bin bags and litter pickers! If you’d like to borrow one, please let us know when you register.

JCI Aberdeen is delighted to partner up with Granite City Speakers which is part of the Association of Speakers&#8217; Clubs (ASC). The speakers&#8217; club helps it members to improve their public speaking and leadership skills. This workshop will help you to develop your public speaking skills and speak with confidence



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">About this event</h2>



This workshop will focus on public speaking and how you can develop your confidence when facing an audience.



Your trainer, Roddy Macpherson, will bring knowledge and experience from his years on the public speaking circuit. The eye-catching picture of Roddy in the red coatee of his current position, Unicorn Pursuivant of Arms at the Lyon Court, is purposeful. His colourfulness is linguistic as well as sartorial. This has a purpose &#8211; to be persuasive.



This workshop will be a cheerful introduction to the ins-and-outs of public speaking, namely invention, arrangement, delivery &#8211; or, as Roddy prefers to put it, preparation, preparation, preparation.



You will leave this workshop with a better understanding of your own preparation methods and delivery style. You will learn to be more eloquent and be purposeful in your delivery, speaking without being tied to your notes&#8230;so long as you pass the vital test&#8230;to have something that needs to be said!

About the Trainer



Roddy Macpherson practices as a messenger-at-arms and sheriff officer under the firm name of Rutherford &amp; Macpherson. He also holds the office of Unicorn Pursuivant at The Court of the Lord Lyon, is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and sometime Secretary of the Oxford University Heraldry Society. He has twice been President of the Society of Messengers-at-Arms and Sheriff Officers, was Preses of the Grand Antiquity Society of Glasgow and is a past President of the Glasgow Highland Club.

JCI Glasgow is a leadership development network for young professionals in Glasgow. We were established in 1937 and after a few quiet years (thanks Covid!) we’re ready to relaunch our leadership development network in Glasgow!

As we move into the summer months, we&#8217;re looking forward to spending more time outside exploring the city.



In true JCI style, we&#8217;re pushing ourselves and taking on the famous &#8216;7 Hills of Edinburgh&#8217; challenge! Join us for this full day activity and get to know Edinburgh on foot.



We&#8217;ll meet at Edinburgh Castle, and follow the route which takes us to every corner of the city, before finishing at a pub for some celebratory drinks.



The walk is expected to take up to 12 hours in total, so it will be a challenging day. As all of the hills are within the city, if any participants need to leave early, or cannot finish the walk for any reason, they can leave at any point and will be in a central location. So please don&#8217;t worry if you feel you can&#8217;t complete the full course.

Caro Overy&nbsp;is a musician and sustainability professional based in Edinburgh. In her work with&nbsp;Creative Carbon Scotland, she supports cultural organisations and artists with tools, resources and training as they seek to address the climate emergency. Since 2020, Caro has received support from&nbsp;Creative Informatics&nbsp;to shape&nbsp;Climate Friendly Culture, collaborating with&nbsp;inGenerator&nbsp;and&nbsp;Creative Carbon Scotland&nbsp;to develop a digital tool to support sustainable culture.



Following an undergraduate degree in Philosophy/History with European Study at the&nbsp;University of Exeter, Caro moved to Edinburgh in 2009 to undertake an MSc in Environment Culture &amp; Society at the&nbsp;University of Edinburgh&nbsp;where she subsequently worked in Social Responsibility &amp; Sustainability for seven years. Ever valuing interdisciplinary life, after a short stint as a professional musician, she found her current professional balance at the intersection of arts and climate change. Caro is passionate about the practical and unique role culture plays in transitioning to a lower-carbon, fairer world. As a lifelong practising musician, she leads community choirs, facilitates community music projects, and works as a vocalist, lyricist and guitarist with a number of performing bands and artists.

In all walks of life, we have to do some form of public speaking, even if we don’t realise it. How often have you been caught off guard when speaking in a meeting by a question that has been asked? How do you react and think on your feet?



During this interactive workshop, this is exactly the sort of scenario you will be training for. Through this training session, you will learn to think faster on your feet and provide a quality answer.



Whether you have been doing public speaking for years, or just want to push yourself to try new things, this is a great event to do that in a safe and welcoming environment. You will learn the basics of how to do off the cuff speaking, as well as prepare a new story to deliver to the room (all in a fun way, of course!).



Our trainer for this event is Steven Crawford. Steven is well known within JCI, joining in 2014, he went on to become JCI Edinburgh president in 2018, and national president in 2020. He did his first public talk at the age of 7, and has learnt many skills since then on how to be a better public speaker over the years. He won the JCI Scotland National Public Speaking award in 2018, and has provided several public speaking and debating training for members

First Friday Drinks is a great event for catching up with members old and new, or if you&#8217;re not currently a member, to find out more about JCI.

What is Earth Day about?



Marked by millions around the world, Earth Day is an annual event designed to shine a light on the serious environmental problems we’re facing, from the climate crisis to air pollution and deforestation.



Earth Day 2022 occurs after the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a study in August 2021 that was regarded as a &#8220;code red for humanity,&#8221; with experts warning that temperatures are expected to soar above 2°C above pre-industrial levels this century (a scenario that would have catastrophic effects worldwide). Meanwhile, there was widespread dissatisfaction with the agreement reached at COP26 in November 2021, demonstrating the severity of the task we confront.



Come join us, together with over 1 billion volunteers worldwide, in cleaning up our respective communities of litter and waste! Meet us at the entrance of Torry Point Battery at 10:00AM with your bin bags and litter pickers! If you’d like to borrow one, please let us know when you register.

About the Speaker/Trainer



<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-cranston/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Peter Cranston</a>&nbsp;is an experienced Chartered Engineer (CEng), registered Project Management Professional (PMP) and Toastmaster DTM.



He has led projects as both Project Engineer and Manager for over 30 years for major contractors and operators and has been responsible for a range of topsides, subsea and drilling upgrades projects with reporting team size up to 100 and project value up to £80M.



His focus is in ensuring simple robust work processes and coaching/developing team members at all levels through his company,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/cranstoneng/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cranston Engineering Ltd</a>.



Regarding coaching and training, he is the author of a 31-chapter text entitled the “Project Engineers Toolkit” and a recently released series of online webinars focusing on coaching and developing the Project Engineering community.

Hosted by JCI Scotland, this Academy is for JCI members who are interesting in learning more about debating at all levels and keen to get some practice in with other members.



This will be an in-person event that will be hosted in Edinburgh, Scotland. On Thursday 11th November from 6pm BST &#8211; 9pm BST JCI Edinburgh is hosting an Introduction to Improv workshop. What can you expect?



The main aim of this workshop is to have fun. We will start with a few group warm-up activities to ease you into the world of improv and then we will dive right in. We&#8217;ll dispel any preconceived ideas about having to be quick thinking and funny, and start learning some simple guidelines (not rules!) that will get you performing scenes almost straightway. We&#8217;ll play some different games and formats (some may be familiar if you&#8217;ve ever watched Who&#8217;s Line Is It Anyway?) that will show you just how much fun this beautiful artform can be. The keyword here is &#8216;Play&#8217;. Together we will create a safe space where we can leave our inhibitions behind and play.



There will also be pizza and drinks. Don&#8217;t miss out and book your spot today.

The project started in 2008 when JCI Estonia, in collaboration with the government, business leaders and over 500 civic organisations, launched a campaign to clean up their communities and their country of the waste which had been dumped illegally all over the landscape. Since then, it has grown and has turned into one of the fastest growing global civic movements of modern times. The project is now supported by governments and businesses in over 150 countries worldwide.



Come join us, together with over 50 million volunteers worldwide, in cleaning up our respective communities of litter and waste! Meet us at the entrance of Torry Point Battery at 10:00AM with your bin bags and litter pickers! Dialogue is all about having an open discussion, where the topic is the centre and there are no sides. This allows the participant the opportunity to develop solutions to challenges and ultimately look at taking action that has meaningful impact.



We hope to achieve this by providing opportunities for young professionals to engage in dialogue.

* Developing confidence, empathy, critical thinking, and other 21st Century skills



* Increasing awareness of our common humanity while also learning to engage constructively with difference



* Developing listening skills, mutual respect, challenging points of view and accepting that others think differently to you, creating a platform for change and action

About the Speaker

MA, LMHC, NCC</a>&nbsp;is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of Florida and has a Master’s of Science in Applied Psychology and Mental Health Counseling. Deborah began her training in in-patient treatment for Addiction/Substance Use Disorder and accompanying comorbid/concurrent disorders. After several years working with clients and their families in in-patient care, she eventually started her own private practice. Now, Deborah has turned her focus to how early childhood wounds manifest shame, low self-worth and low self-esteem in her adult clients. She has been trained in various evidence-based modalities: CBT, DBT, REBT, Gottman, NARM, etc. and as a result, is considered an eclectic therapist. She tailors her interventions to the client’s needs and their presenting problems. Deborah specialises in addiction, co-dependency, anxiety, depression, C-PTSD (complex childhood trauma) and mood disorders. This course is created to engage participants to understand why JCI exists as they focus on the core values and framework that drive the JCI Mission. It also explores the skills members can develop as leaders in the organization to create sustainable impact in a changing world. JCI Discover is a new course that combines the main aspects of JCI Achieve and JCI Impact. If you have already taken these two courses, you do not need to take JCI Discover.

Since March 2020 many of us have been thrown into a world where remote working is the norm. We’ve survived and, in many ways, thrived, learning through trial and error what works and refining what hasn’t.



This workshop is an opportunity to step back and think about what managing remotely will look like in a post-pandemic world. During the workshop, we will look at flexibility versus boundaries, managing outcomes and creating communities.

Being open to change is deeply meaningful in the world in which we live, having our beliefs system is important but what do we do when we are challenged? Dialogue is all about having an open discussion, where the topic is the centre and there are no sides. This allows the participant the opportunity to develop solutions to challenges and ultimately look at taking action that has meaningful impact.



We hope to achieve this by providing opportunities for young professionals to engage in dialogue.

* Increasing awareness of our common humanity while also learning to engage constructively with difference

Online engagement has never been more crucial, both during the current circumstances and futureproofing for a radically changed world. Inclusive virtual get-togethers ensure that our people &#8211; whether staff, clients or target audiences – can meaningfully participate in our activities. Without being mindful of this, we risk limiting our reach and unintentionally excluding people.



Digital inclusion and engagement are complex topics; but too important to be ignored. This session will offer a safe space to introduce participants to some useful principles for running more inclusive digital get-togethers.



*Please note that information about engaging in the session on April 13th will be sent to those registered a day before the event. This is not essential information but serves to manage expectations of the space.



By the end of this session, participants will be able to:



• Identify barriers to participation in online events.



• Design and deliver more inclusive virtual get togethers.

About the trainer



Lynn Pilkington is a member of JCI Glasgow and an accidental COVID entrepreneur, fascinated by people and work cultures. For over a decade she’s been a professional plot twister, pivoter and problem solver. The ‘traditional’ road to work didn’t work for her and she’s on a mission to help create an inclusive and diverse working landscape in which everyone belongs. Combining her expertise of equalities and engagement, her value lies in building inclusive, improved and impactful workplaces.



She has recently launched an ‘Imperfect Inclusion Community’, which is open to those interested in impactful and inclusive online engagement. By coming together in a safe space, members work out how to make online engagement a bit better for more people more of the time. We would like to welcome Morag from MOONSTIR to our panel. Morag is a dedicated HR professional with a focused interest in health and wellbeing.



Most recently, Morag has qualified as a Psychotherapist having evidenced the change that talking therapies can make in balancing mental health. She is particularly experienced in stress, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and coping with change.



With a solid understanding of psychology via her BSc, her Masters in HR and IOSH certificates, Morag&#8217;s interest stress management has been used to support businesses with their employee health and wellbeing. As a Member of the International Stress Management Association, Morag is going to present an introductory session on stress awareness with an interactive activity to focus your own self-care.

A Fellow of CIPD, Member of British Psychological Society, Member of International Stress Management Association and Member of BACP. Morag is positively focused on people and psychology with 20+ years HR Generalist Management experience and specific experience working with Stress Management. Morag will provide an insight into how stress impacts the mind and body as well as giving an overview of UK legal frameworks required to maintain stress at work.



Laura Leslie, Registered Nutritional Therapist



Laura offers nutrition and lifestyle advice to help employees achieve their holistic health goals. In a world where there are so many expectations and available nutrition information, it can be difficult to know what is right for employees. Laura will provide an insight into the balancing stress through diet and eating behaviours.



Lucie Ross, Resilience Coach



Lucie is a Graduate of PRIME sponsored by Junior Chamber International Training Institute, in Istanbul, Turkey in 1998 and was a Finalist in the Young Communicator of the Year Award for Scotland in 1988. She is Lucie is an experienced coach with a passion for people development. She holds an MSc in Human Resource Management, is a Chartered Member of the CIPD and holds a Certificate in Coaching &amp; Mentoring. Lucie will share her experiences of anxiety, stress, mental health issues and depression in both the workplace and in and around her life.



Jenny Thomson, Psychotherapist and Coach



With years of experience working in mental health delivering social work interventions, coaching and cognitive behavioural interventions as well as an experienced business owner, Jenny&#8217;s background offers insight into the influence of social as well as psychological factors on individuals and their mental and emotional wellbeing. The final part of our evening, Jenny will guide you through a paired exercise whereby you can review your own self-care activities.



Having been in HR for 20+ years plus a volunteer with CLAN Cancer Support, Aberdeen Counselling and Information Services, and Shirley&#8217;s Space, Morag truly believes that we all have the capacity to adapt with the right support.

How to join the game?



<ul><li>You will need two devices: A mobile phone or tablet to play the game. We will direct you to the https://allbad.cards/ website using your phone’s web browser. You do not need to download any apps.</li><li>A laptop, computer, tablet or 2nd mobile phone to join our Zoom chat and interact with the other players in the game.</li></ul>

During the month of April and on the lead up to Earth Day on the 22nd, we are coming together as a team (not literally due to restrictions) and cleaning up our local areas. 



This could be your commute to work, local park, beach, hike and anywhere in between.



The plan is to grab your litter pickers, bin bags and a good playlist and get sorting the recycling.
