JCI European conference is coming up soon, and JCI Scotland, along with help from our Tri-Nations friends, Ireland & United Kingdom, have a new academy for those who are looking to compete in the English speaking Debate Competitions.

The Training

This training course is for delegates who are looking to compete at the upcoming European Conference. Knowledge of the basics of how to debate is required, as this is for a more in depth look at how to debate. The trainers will look at more details of debating such as:

  • Refining the motion
  • Dealing with, and giving good Points of Information
  • Judging Criteria and how to make it work for your team
  • Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
  • Prepare to succeed, not fail
  • More detailed role definition

Dates & Timings

  • 23rd April 6PM – 9PM BST
  • 24th April 9am – 3pm BST
  • 25th April 9am – 1pm BST

Timings subject to change, and will be confirmed with delegates beforehand.

Optional Training Course

While delegates should already know the rules to debating, if not, don’t worry. We can run an additional training course on the 22nd of April to cover the basics of debating.

The Trainers

We have 3 highly experienced trainers for the weekend, who have all got a lot of JCI Debating experience, and have all won at an international level. Our three trainers are:

Head Trainer – Stanley Yau, Senator #, JCI Scotland
Trainer – Keira Keogh, Senator #, JCI Ireland
Trainer – Chris Adamson, JCI United Kingdom

The History

JCI Scotland has a long history of competing in debating over the years. In fact, the debating award at world congress is named after a former 1963 World President, Eric Stevenson, who introduced debating competitions to the congress program! Scotland has competed many times on the international stage, and has won several times, including last year’s online competition for the European Conference.

JCI Scotland hosted this academy in January 2020 as an in person event for our members, alongside members from JCI Ireland and UK. This proved to be a very successful event, and went on to help all three national organisations go on to compete internationally. At the European Online Conference, all the finalists (Scotland vs UK) were delegates, as were two from the Ireland team who made it to the semi finals.  At world conference, all 3 members of the winning team, including one of this year’s trainers, were delegates.

Application to Attend

Interested in attending? Then speak to your national president to get the application form from the JCI Scotland National President, Katie Black. There are 3 space for each National Organisation, so the whole team entering can learn and train together. Tickets are £75.00 + Booking Fees, (Or £25.00 per person).
